What are they going to ask you?

They will ask you to listen to a conversation (two people talking usually friends) and then answer the questions  (11-15) choosing options A, B or C.

For example:

Questions 11-15

Complete the five conversations.

For questions 11-15, mark A, B or C on your answer sheet.

Example:

Answer to 0 = A

My note: A es la respuesta correcta porque la pregunta es “¿De dónde eres? Las alternativas son A. New York. B. Escuela y C. Casa, por tanto, A es la única que tiene sentido “New York”.

How are you supposed to do this?

You have to learn vocabulary included in the A2 level, such as going shopping, travelling, being at home, going out with friends or going to a restaurant. Tienes que aprender vocabulario incluidos en el nivel A2, tal como ir de compras, viajar, estar en casa, salir con amigos o salir a un restaurante.

You should read the questions and answers carefully. As you will hear the conversation twice, try to use the first recording to answer the questions and the second one to correct the mistakes. Debes leer las preguntas y respuestas cuidadosamente. Ya que escucharás la conversación dos veces, intenta utilizar el primer audio para contestar las preguntas y el segundo para corregir los errores.

What is a preposition?

A preposition is a word, or phrase, that is usually placed before a noun, or a pronoun, to show the relationship to another word in the sentence. Una preposición es una palabra, o frase, que generalmente se coloca antes de un sustantivo, o pronombre, para indicar la relación que existe con otra palabra en la frase.

For example:  The cat is ON (preposition)—>(relationship) the table (noun). El gato está SOBRE (preposición) —>(relación) la mesa (sustantivo).

Prepositions of place

In English, like in Spanish, there are preposition of place, time, direction, agent (for example, by or with). The main problem Spanish speaking students experience with English prepositions is that they don’t often coincide with the Spanish prepositions. One reason is that in Spanish we have one preposition (EN) for three different prepositions in English (IN, ON and AT).

En inglés, como en español, hay preposiciones de lugar, tiempo, dirección, agente (por ejemplo “por” o “con”). El principal problema que experimentan los estudiantes hispanoparlantes con las preposiciones inglesas es que frecuentemente no coinciden con las preposiciones en español. Una razón es que en español tenemos una preposición (EN) que se corresponden con tres diferentes preposiciones en inglés (IN, ON y AT).

The best way to learn them is in sentences. Images also help. La mejor manera de aprenderlas es en frases.

To distinguish ON from IN, there are two easy rules to remember:

a) ON indicates “ON TOP OF” and IN indicates “INSIDE OF”. ON indica SOBRE e IN indica DENTRO.

For example:

  • The cat is ON the table. El gato está SOBRE la mesa.
  • The cat is IN the box. El gato está DENTRO de la caja.

b) In general, ON indicates “public transport” and IN indicates “private transport”. En general, ON indica “transporte público” e IN indica “transporte privado”.

For example:

  • I got ON the bus. Me subí al autobús.
  • I’m IN my car. Estoy en mi coche.
  • They are ON the train. Están en el tren.
  • We are ON the plain. Estamos en el avión.
  • We went ON a ship. Fuimos en barco (grande).

In the following images we can see examples of prepositions of place. Try to remember them by visualising the image.  En las siguientes imágenes podemos ver ejemplos de preposiciones de lugar. Intenta recordarlas visualizando la imagen.
