1) Actually- Realmente

No significa ACTUALMENTE. Significa “realmente”, “de hecho”.

Ejemplo:

  • No. He isn’ my brother, ACTUALLY he’s my cousin. 
  • No. Él no es mi hermano, realmente es mi primo.

2) to ARGUE or to have an ARGUMENT- Discutir

No significa ARGUMENTO, significa “discusión”, es decir, cuando dos, o más personas, “discuten por algo” (tiene sentido negativo).

Ejemplo:

  • I’m very upset with Lille, we had an ARGUMENT last night and I couldn’t sleep.
  • Estoy muy disgustado con Lille, DISCUTIMOS anoche y no pude dormir.

3) Assist- Ayudar

No significa ASISTIR, significa AYUDAR.

Ejemplo:

  • She always ASSISTS people in need.
  • Ella siempre AYUDA a la gente necesitada.

4) Attend- Asistir

No significa ATENDER, significa ASISTIR.

Ejemplo:

  • I don’t know if I would be able to ATTEND the meeting.
  • No sé si podré ASISTIR a la reunión.

5) Billion- Mil millones

A BILLION no es en US un MILLÓN DE MILLONES, es MIL MILLONES.

Ejemplo:

  • In the US one BILLION is one thousand million, not one million of million.
  • En Estados Unidos un BILLÓN es mil millones, no un millón de millones.

NOTA: Sin embargo, A BILLION en Reino Unido sí es un millón de millones.

6) Career- Carrera profesional

CAREER no es CARRERA UNIVERSITARIA, es CARRERA PROFESIONAL. Carrera universitaria se dice DEGREE o STUDIES.

Ejemplo:

  • He made a great CARRER as researcher in the lab.
  • Hizo una gran CARRERA como investigador en el laboratorio.

7) Carpet- Alfombra

CARPET no es CARPETA, es ALFOMBRA.

Ejemplo:

  • We bought a nice white CARPET for our living room.
  • Compramos una bonita ALFOMBRA blanca para nuestro salón.

8) Conductor- Director de orquesta/ material que sirve para “conducir”/cobrador de tren/bus

CONDUCTOR no es CONDUCTOR, es DIRECTOR DE ORQUESTA. También tiene el significado de “conductor” de algún elemento como electricidad, gas, agua, etc. Por última, también se les llama CONDUCTOR a los cobradores del billete de tren o autobús.

Ejemplos:

  • We need a CONDUCTOR for a school orchestra.
  • Necesitamos un DIRECTOR para la orquesta del colegio.
  • Water is an excellent CONDUCTOR of electricity
  • El agua es un excelente CONDUCTOR de la electricidad.
  • When he saw the CONDUCTOR on the train he tried to escape without paying the fare.

9) Constipated- Estreñido

CONSTIPATED no significa ACATARRADO, significa ESTREÑIDO/A

Ejemplo:

  • Every time he drinks wine and eats meat he gets CONSTIPATED.

10) Deception- Engaño

DECEPTION no significa DECEPCIÓN, significa “ENGAÑO.”

Ejemplo:

  • He is a master of DECEPTION. What he sells never arrives and he doesn’t return your the money.
  • Es un maestro del ENGAÑO. Lo que vende nunca llega y no te devuelve el dinero.

11) To discuss- discussion- Debatir, hablar

DISCUSSION no significa DISCUSIÓN (sentido negativo), significa “DEBATIR”, “HABLAR”.

Ejemplo:

  • I need to DISCUSS with you our new project for expanding the business.
  • Necesito HABLAR contigo de nuestro nuevo proyecto para expandir el negocio.

12) to be/get Embarrassed or Embarrassing – Estar avergonzado o ser avergonzante

To be/get EMBARRASSED no significa estar EMBARAZADA, significa estar AVERGONZADO.

Ejemplo:

  • He was/got really EMBARRASSED when they caught him stealing a pen in the office.
  • Se AVERGONZÓ mucho cuando lo pillaron robando un bolígrafo en la oficina.

13) Fabric- Tela

FABRIC no significa FÁBRICA, significa TELA, TEJIDO.

Ejemplo:

  • I bought a white FABRIC to make the curtains.
  • Compré una TELA blanca para hacer las cortinas.

14) Facilities- Instalaciones

FACILITIES no significa FACILIDADES, significa INSTALACIONES.

Ejemplo:

  • Yesterday we visited the company’s FACILITIES in the north. They are modern and well-located.
  • Ayer visitamos las INSTALACIONES de la empresa en el norte. Son modernas y están bien situadas.

15) Introduce- Presentar (a una/s persona/s)(*)

INTRODUCE no significa INTRODUCIR cuando hablamos de personas. Significa PRESENTAR a una persona o personas.

Ejemplo:

  • Let me INTRODUCE you to Christine, she is our new COO.
  • Déjame que te PRESENTE a Christine, ella es nuestra nueva Jefa de Operaciones.

(*) Puede significar INTRODUCIR en el sentido de “mostrar”, “exhibir”, “dar a conocer algo”.

Por ejemplo: 

  • The potato was INTRODUCED in Europe in the 16th century.
  • La patata fue INTRODUCIDA en Europa en el siglo 16.

16) Jam – Mermelada

JAM no significa JAMÓN, significa MERMELADA. (Jam: mermelada hecha con frutas- Jelly: hecha con zumo de frutas)

Ejemplo:

  • I like to have a piece of toast with JAM for breakfast.
  • Me gusta tomar una tostada con MERMELADA para desayunar.

17) Large- Grande

LARGE no significa LARGO, significa GRANDE.

  • She has LARGE room to store all her paintings.
  • Ella tiene una GRAN habitación para guardar todos sus cuadros.

18) Library- Biblioteca

LIBRARY no significa LIBRERÍA (tienda que vende libros), significa BIBLIOTECA.

  • When I was a student I always used to study at the LIBRARY.
  • Cuando era estudiante siempre solía estudiar en la BIBLIOTECA.

19) Misery- Pena-Tristeza

MISERY no significa MISERIA, significa TRISTEZA.

Ejemplo:

  • You need to go on a holiday to forget your MISERY.
  • Necesitas ir de vacaciones para olvidar tu TRISTEZA.

20) Molest- Abusar sexualmente de alguien

MOLEST no significa MOLESTAR, significa ABUSAR SEXUALMENTE A ALGUIEN o ACOSAR.

Ejemplo:

  • Sadly that gym teacher MOLESTED some of his students.
  • Tristemente ese profesor de gimnasia ABUSÓ SEXUALMENTE de algunos de sus alumnos.

21) Notice – Darse cuenta/notar/avisar- Letrero/aviso

NOTICE no significa NOTICIA. Puede ser verbo, y en este caso significa DARSE CUENTA o NOTAR. Como sustantivo significa LETRERO/ AVISO.

Ejemplos:

  • Have you NOTICED that he now doesn’t talk about the new project?
  • ¿Has NOTADO que ahora no habla sobre el nuevo proyecto?
  • They put up a NOTICE in the shop about the new opening hours.
  • Pusieron un AVISO en la tienda sobre el nuevo horario.

22) Preservative- Conservante

PRESERVATIVE no significa PRESERVATIVO, significa CONSERVANTE.

Ejemplo: 

  • I don’t like preprepared food because it has too many PRESERVATIVES.
  • No me gusta la comida precocinada porque tiene demasiados CONSERVANTES.

23) Pretend- Fingir

To PRETEND no significa PRETENDER, significa FINGIR.

Ejemplo:

  • Why are you PRETENDING to be rich when you’re not?

  • ¿Por qué FINGES ser rico cuando no lo eres?

24) Propaganda- Influir en la opinion pública

PROPAGANDA en inglés no es PUBLICIDAD. Significa más bien “difundir información para INFLUIR en la opinión pública”.

Ejemplo:

  • His speech was nothing but PROPAGANDA.
  • Su discurso no era otra cosa que PROPAGANDA.

25) Realize/Realise – Darse cuenta/ hacer realidad

REALIZE no es REALIZAR, es DARSE CUENTA. También puede significar HACER REALIDAD.

Ejemplos:

  • At the beginning I didn’t REALIZE he was talking to me.
  • Al principio no me DI CUENTA que me estaba hablando a mí.
  • His dreams REALIZED when he was finally able to go to the moon.
  • Sus sueños se HICIERON REALIDAD cuando finalmente pudo ir la luna.

26) Sensitive- Sensible

SENSITIVE no significa SENSITIVO, significa SENSIBLE, DELICADO.

Ejemplo:

  • I don’t like to say anything to her because she’s very SENSITIVE.
  • No me gusta decirle nada a ella porque es muy SENSIBLE.

27) Sensible- Sensato

SENSIBLE no significa, SENSIBLE, significa SENSATO.

Ejemplo:

  • I think she’s very SENSIBLE; she always thinks twice before making a decision.
  • Creo que ella es muy SENSATA; siempre medita antes de tomar una decisión.
