General Vocabulary

1) Long-haul flight- Vuelo de larga distancia

  • I’m going on a LONG-HAUL FLIGHT to Indonesia next week. I wonder how I’m going to stand more than 20 hours sitting.
  • Me voy en un vuelo de larga distancia a Indonesia la semana que viene. Me pregunto cómo voy a soportar estar sentado más de 20 horas.

2) A bumpy flight – Vuelo turbulento

  • It was a BUMPY FLIGHT because there was storm in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.
  • Fue un vuelo turbulento porque hubo una tormenta en el medio del océano atlántico.

3) A red-eye flight- Vuelo de larga distancia

  • I don’t like RED-EYE FLIGHTS because it seems that you’ll never arrive to your destination.
  • No me gustan los vuelos de larga distancia porque parece que nunca llegarás a tu destino.

4) Shuttle bus- Lanzadera (Autobús que va desde el aeropuerto a la ciudad o otro terminal, u hotel)

  • I took the SHUTTLE BUS every week to get to the new terminal at the airport.
  • Cogía la lanzadera todas las semanas para llegar al nuevo terminal en el aeropuerto.

5) Tourist trap- Trampa para turistas

  • When I went to Florence last month, we ate a restaurant that was a TOURIST TRAP. They charged us 50 euros por a salad and a drink.
  • Cuando fuimos a Florencia el mes pasado, comimos en un restaurante que era una trampa para turistas. Nos cobraron 50 euros por una ensalada y una bebida.

 

 

Baggage / luggage

1) Luggage: Equipaje

  • He lost his LUGGAGE when he went to Rome.
  • Perdió su equipaje cuando fue a Roma.

2) Luggage label : Etiqueta de equipaje

  • Don’t forget to fill out your LUGGAGE LABEL.
  • No te olvides de cumplimentar la etiqueta de tu maleta.

3) Hand luggage: Equipaje de mano

  • I’m only taking HAND LUGGAGE to Paris.
  • Solo llevaré equipaje de mano para París.

4) Left luggage office: Depósito de equipaje

  • You can collect your suitcase at the LEFT LUGGAGE OFFICE from 9am to 8pm.
  • Puedes recoger to maleta en el depósito de equipaje desde las 9am a las 8pm.

5) Luggage rack: Portaequipaje

  • You must put your skis on the LUGGAGE RACK because they don’t fit in the trunk.
  • Debes poner tus esquís en el portaequipaje  porque no caben en el maletero.

6) Baggage check: Check-in

  • Let’s go first to BAGGAGE CHECK, then we can have a coffee.
  • Vayamos primero a hacer el check in, luego nos tomamos un café.

7) Baggage reclaim: Zona de recogida de equipajes

  • It’s easy to find the BAGGAGE RECLAIM, just follow the signs when you arrive at the airport.
  • Es fácil encontrar la zona de recogida de equipajes, solo tienes que seguir los carteles cuando llegues al aeropuerto.

8) Checked baggage: Equipaje facturado

  • There are about 1000 pieces of CHECKED BAGGAGE at the airport now.

9) Emotional baggage: Carga emocional (Figurado)

  • I think you carry too much EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE.

11) Excess baggage: Exceso de equipaje.

  • If you have EXCESS BAGGAGE you have to pay.
  • Si tienes exceso de equipaje tienes que pagar.

12) To travel light: Viajar ligero

  • I like to TRAVEL LIGHT. If you have too many suitcases you can’t run.
  • Me gusta viajar ligero. Si tienes demasiadas maletas no puedes correr.

13) Suitcase (on wheels): Maleta (con ruedas)

  • She bought a SUITCASE ON WHEELS that’s very nice.
  • Ella compró una maleta con ruedas que es muy bonita.

14) Briefcase: Maletín

  • I don’t use a BRIEFCASE anymore. I prefer to take a backpack where I can fit my laptop.
  • Ya no uso maletín. Prefiero llevar una mochila donde puedo meter mi portátil.

15) Compartments (inside bags): Compartimientos dentro de la maleta o bolsa de viaje.

  • My friend always packs her suitcase with COMPARTMENTS. That’s why she has all her clothes very well organized.
  • Mi amiga siempre hace la maleta utilizando compartimientos. Por eso tiene toda la ropa muy bien organizada.

16) Packing cubes: Cubos de embalaje

  • I recommend that you buy some PACKING CUBES to organize your clothes inside the suitcase.
  • Te recomiendo que compres unos cubos de embalaje para organizar tu ropa dentro de la maleta.

17) Rucksack: Mochila generalmente fabricada en lona.

  • It’s better to take a RUCKSACK than a bag if you’re going to go hiking.
  • Es mejor que lleves una mochila que una bolsa, si vas a hacer senderismo.

18) Backpack: Mochila

  • They took BACKPACKS to Nepal.
  • Todos llevaron mochilas a Nepal.

19) Holdall: Bolsa de viaje con asas

  • Mary bought a nice HOLDALL at the market.
  • Mary compró una bonita bolsa de viaje en el mercado.

20) Duffel bag: Bolsa de lona para efectos de uso personal (*)

  • I got a DUFFEL BAG for Christmas. I love it.
  • Me regalaron una bolsa de lona para Navidad. Me encanta.

(*) Named after the town where their thick cloth was originally made. The town of Duffel is in Belgium, near Antwerp, and its production of the bag’s coarse, woolen cloth dates back to the mid-17th century.

21) Bum bag (UK)/fanny pack (US): Riñonera (España)

  • When I travel I always take a BUM BAG for my passport and money.
  • Cuando viajo siempre llevo una riñonera para mi pasaporte y dinero.

22) To pack: Hacer las maletas

  • You’d better start PACKING now or be late for the plane.
  • Más vale que hagas la maleta ya o llegaremos tarde al avión.

23) To unpack: Deshacer las maletas

  • When he comes back from a trip it takes him four days to UNPACK.
  • Cuando regresa de un viaje, tarda 4 días en deshacer sus maletas.

24) Packable: Comprimible, plegable

  • That bag is PACKABLE so take it inside your backpack in case you need an extra bag.
  • Esa bolsa es plegable, así que llévala dentro de tu mochila en caso de que necesitas una bolsa extra.

25) Conveyer belt: Cinta transportadora

  • I got the wrong suitcase from the CONVEYER BELT.
  • Cogí la maleta equivocada de la cinta transportadora.

Phrasal verbs

1) Take off : Despegar

  • What time does the plane TAKE OFF.
  • ¿A qué hora (sale) despega el avión?

2) Set off: Partir, salir de viaje

  • They SET OFF to Greece last week.
  • Salieron a Grecia la semana pasada.

3) Stop off (on the way somewhere) :Hacer escala

  • I going to STOP OFF in Milan on my way to Israel.
  • Voy a hacer escala en Milán de camino a Israel.

4) See (someone) off: Despedir a alguien

  • I SAW OFF my friend Pepe at the airport last night.
  • Me despedí de mi amigo Pepe en el aeropuerto anoche.

5) Drop (someone) off: Dejar a alguien (aeropuerto, estación)

  • Who do you have to DROP OFF at the airport tomorrow?
  • ¿A quién tienes que dejar en el aeropuerto mañana?

6) Pick (someone) up: Recoger a alguien

  • I’m going to PICK UP my children at the station this afternoon.
  • Voy a recoger a mis hijos en la estación esta tarde.

7) Check in- Facturar equipaje.

  • When are you going to CHECK IN?
  • ¿Cuándo vas a facturar el equipaje?

8) to be held up: Retrasarse, hacer esperar .

  • I was HELD UP by the traffic and I arrived late at the airport.
  • Me retrasé por el tráfico y llegué tarde al aeropuerto.
