In the summer e in summer son igual de correctos. Ahora bien, se usa mucho más IN THE SUMMER.

La razón es probablemente porque IN THE SUMMER sirve para referirse a un verano en particular, cosa que no puedes hacer con IN SUMMER.

Por ejemplo: Do you remember, IN THE SUMMER when we met Michael? We all went to Venice. ¿Recuerdas, en EL VERANO (uno particular, cuando conocimos a Michael? Todos nos fuimos a Venecia. Nota: En este ejemplo, obligatoriamente debes decir IN THE SUMMER. No puedes usar IN SUMMER.
